Reinventing social interactions in the winter sports community

My Role
Research, Prototyping, Mobile App Design

Time
February - March 2025

  • Identified, researched, and interviewed potential users

  • Created user flows and framework of the application

  • Structured low-fidelity wireframes and a working prototype for user testing

  • Built a high-fidelity design with a deliverable, interactive prototype

Challenge

In a time when technology offers people seamless access to experience any culture, the actual pursuit of living that lifestyle can be impeded by the looming threat of isolation that accompanies starting a new life away from home. Paired with the nuances associated with the remote nature of ski towns, it can be extremely difficult to migrate to an already small community and build a network of friends with similar skillsets and interests.

Opportunity

With existing social media platforms lacking features dedicated to winter sports communities, aspirants of pursuing these interests are left with relying on their previously established relationships to expand their knowledge base and network. Technology can be harnessed to more effectively bring like-minded individuals together to enjoy the mountains.

Research Takeaways

I sourced participants I met on chairlifts who are:

  • Between the ages of 18-65

  • Living in California, Utah, and Colorado

  • Have an Ikon or Epic Pass

  • Skied/snowboarded at least 15 days this season

Solo Days

Skill Level

Looking to Buy/Sell Gear

Job Status

Based off research insights, I developed a user flow to address their goals and pain points

Following the initial user flow, I sketched out lo-fi mockups and produced a working prototype for usability testing

Usability Test Insights

Poor navigation regarding social connections

My initial bias in formatting communities generated restrictions such as limiting groups and difficulties adding/connection with other users. I must improve platform flexibility to accommodate for a diverse set of users and therefore promote a stronger sense of community.

The gear space was a hit

The dedicated C2C marketplace showed a strong distinction from other communities and users found it helpful to buy/sell/trade due to the pricey nature of the industry. Winter sports are expensive as it is, and connecting users to potential buyers and cheaper gear cultivates an expansive network.

Intuitive Onboarding

Learn how to grow your squad and become active in the gear marketplace by moving through the onboarding flow immediately after signing up. Building your core group of companions on the mountain is now easier than ever.

Discussion Forum Navigation

Whether it’s educational or recreational, dive into communities to connect with users who share your interests and goals on hill. Once a user is added to your squad, you can message them directly and privately to enhance your new relationships.

Gear Marketplace Upload

Post your gear that is ready to sell with ease on the marketplace by swiftly entering product data. Live listings are instantly accessible for inquiry, purchase, or negotiation.

User-Uploaded New Communities

As demand presents itself for community expansion, users can submit requests for new discussion spaces to be added. Once a request has been received, our moderators will rapidly review submissions and annex them to the platform.
